One of our plans for the summer is to take the canoe and kayaks out as much as possible. For Christmas Paul received the book Quiet Water: A Canoe & Kayak Guide. Our goal was to visit as many of the waterways in our area. This weekend we went to Dubes Pond in Hooksett.
I had my doubts about this place since it was minutes away from the strip malls of Hooksett. I was so wrong. The pond is home to many nesting blue heron. I didn't get any pictures because we wanted to give them plenty of room. The water is abundant with fragrant waterlily and other water plants. We paddled towards the northwest section of the pond paddling among the many islands.

The open water turned to marshy channels filled with more lilly pads, fish and a pair of nesting Canadian Geese. We followed the channel until we got to a low ridge with a single row of trees.
On the other side of the ridge was another pond. We carried the canoe and kayak across the ridge and entered the other pond. This pond was so unlike the first. The water was crystal clear. There were no islands but the pond featured many dead trees standing in the water. It was almost eerie (but in a good way). All signs of civilization disappeared.
As we paddled and fished something caught Paul's eye. This amazing sight - - a female moose and two young. We were in awe. They watched us and then slowly turned and walked back into the forest.
