19.March

  • Email came in at 5:30 that school was cancelled.
  • Dealt with a dead mouse in the living room.
  • First round of driveway shoveling at 6:30 while listening to NHPR.  Already at least 5" of snow had fallen.
  • Watched the final installment of the Twilight Saga which had a twist that Alix and I didn't remember from the book.  We also watched Rise of the Guardians.  Although the kids liked it, I'd say pass on this one.
  • Shoveled two more times.
  • Late afternoon visit at Lucy's for a little wine and cheese/crackers.  She sent me home with lasagna for dinner.
  • Went to bed late with at least 9" of snow on the ground.

More snow.  By days end there would be 14" of new very heavy snow.  I was happy to have a partner in shoveling.

27.December

We woke to heavy snow, eight inches were on the ground by nightfall.  In between, the driveway was shoveled three times; snowballs were tossed; running and frolicking were accomplished; an attempt was made to build a snowman without success thanks to the snowman assassin known as Mesa.

Snow Day:Inspiration:Cooking

12:366
  • We woke to a small amount of snow with the forecast calling for it to continue throughout the day.  School was canceled.
  • In the late morning Chance grabbed his new ice-skates and met some buddies at the park.
  • Alix and her friend tried all afternoon to persuade the parents that the roads were OK to drive on so they could get together.  Although it doesn't happen often we did not relent.  They had to get by texting, talking, and skyping.
  • I made a loaf of sandwich bread, a loaf of artisan bread, and a pot of Wild Rice and Leek Soup. We ate all the soup and artisan bread.  So much for having left-overs.
  • The snow only amount to a little less the 4".  But looking at white is so much better than looking at brown.

With last week's sneak peek at Spring, I realized I was going to need a pair of boots that would get me through the rainy muddy season of walking a dog a few times a day. The Bogs seemed to fit the bill -- waterproof and warm (my feet are always cold). I had to swallow hard the price, but I should get lots of use from them.

A Well Spent Birthday

To celebrate my 43rd birthday, Paul took the day off from the office.  After teaming up to get A & C off to their schools we plotted out the day.  We would combine driving over to Bedford to check out training classes for Neko at American K9 Country with a walk around Pulpit Rock Conservation Area.  The weather was perfect - blue sky, temps in the 20's and no wind.  The trails were easy, although I could have used my yaktrax in a few spots.  The place had a totally different look in the winter.

The day ended with my favorite meal, The Barefoot Contessa's Baked Shrimp Scampi -- better than a restaurant meal.  It was a wonderful day of fresh air, moving my body, good food and being with the man I love.

Neko is shedding his winter coat - EVERYWHERE!  Daily brushing is a must.  Wearing black fleece is not.  If I knew how to spin fleece I would spin this.  It's as soft as angora.

More S _ _ _

The meteorologists were predicting a huge snowstorm.  So big that schools and business announced they would be closed the day prior.  Paul's office included.  While we did get snow it was nearly as much as the 14-20" we prepared for.  I was glad Paul was home to help with the shoveling and to rake the roof.  Chance and Neko played in the ever growing snowbanks.

Roof raking is a must
