Snow drifts sprinkled with nyjer seed.
This week's weather gave us below zero daytime temps, more snow, a delayed school opening, temps nearing 30 -- perfect for a long walk with a dear friend.

Paul and I have been watching and enjoying the PBS Masterpiece presentation of Downton Abbey. It is so unlike us to watch a program on a week night. But we've enjoyed the 90-minute distraction.

Our dishwasher was installed this weekend, which means I may be looking at these treasures on the windowsill above my sink a little less. (Paul and Chance created the tile. The bottle was found in the woods behind our house.)

This dried hydrangea blew into our yard during one of the first snow storms of the season. Alix rescued it and it now sits on a shelf above my desk.

Starting the week with a clean fridge.
We'll be eating: Baked Shrimp Scampi from the Barefoot Contessa, Beef Stew with artisan bread, Eggplant Melts with Caesar Salad, Tacos with rice and beans, and Mexican Beef and Bean Soup with grilled cheese sandwiches.

:: It may be cold and very icy out there, but my Yaktrax and Neko get me out and moving.
And this week it was very important to get some time outside and some time alone, with Monday being a holiday, Tuesday was a snow day, Wednesday was a delayed school opening, Thursday A&C were both home sick, and Friday was another snow day.

Glistening, gleaming sharp and clear
They form on objects overnight
Growing as the day goes by
And sparkling in the light.
They form on objects overnight
Growing as the day goes by
And sparkling in the light.
Dazzling diamonds on the eaves
Pointing toward the snowy ground
Sharp and cold, they linger on
Where icy winds abound
Pointing toward the snowy ground
Sharp and cold, they linger on
Where icy winds abound
Water drips from icy spikes
Threatening, nature’s spear
And silently they melt away
And finally disappear
Threatening, nature’s spear
And silently they melt away
And finally disappear

:: After a long day of shoveling, I was eager to climb into our cozy bed. Looks like someone else beat me to it.

:: The past month of having Paperwhites was such a treat. These jumped into my basket at the market.

Winter Has Arrived
We woke to the snow falling and blowing. School called a Snow Day. By the end of the day we had 18"+. The first whopper of the season. Alix spent the afternoon digging out a snow fort while trying to ignore her annoying brother. Neko was in and out too many times to count. He'd come in long enough to thaw out all the snow-clumps he'd accumulate between his toes and in his long hair. He was in his element. I spent hours shoveling, and shoveling, and shoveling with a bit of cupcake baking thrown in.

Winter does not stop us from air drying our clothes. (And yes, I noticed all the dust on the stove.)
